Things to do in and Around Avebury this Summer

Visiting Avebury this Summer? Take inspiration from some of our favourite things to do during the warmer months…

Soak up the Scenery

There is no shortage of walking routes around Avebury, and although ideal for a wintry walk in wellies, there is nothing quite like seeing the sun illuminate the rolling hills of this historic landscape on a warm Summer’s day.

We’ve featured a number of walks in Avebury on our website and we’ve included a walking guide in our stables, some ideal for those who plan to walk for hours and some suited to families or individuals who might prefer a shorter stroll! Whatever you fancy, grab your walking boots, download OS Maps on your phone and check out some of the stunning local landmarks including Avebury Stone Circle, Silbury Hill, The Ridgeway and West Kennet Long Barrow.

Enjoy a Pub Garden

The perfect reward after a hike… There are plenty of fantastic pubs in and around Avebury, including The Waggon and Horses 2 minutes down the road and The Red Lion which is actually located in the centre of the stone circle! Marlborough is only a short drive away and boasts a range of unique and stylish eateries with outdoor seating. The White Horse Inn, located west of Avebury in Compton Bassett, is known for its award-winning restaurant, however the outdoor space is equally impressive and they have a well stocked bar featuring craft ales, ciders and gins from local breweries and distilleries.

Alfresco Evenings at The Farm

If you’re staying with us at The Farm and feel like staying in, why not make use of our beautiful landscaped courtyard in the centre of our stable accommodation? In the Summer months, our courtyard is bursting with colour as our borders spring to life with an array of cottage flowers.

Guests are able to relax in comfortable outdoor seating and make use of our BBQ or fire pit for toasted marshmallows. We also sell our own farm produce including Beckhampton Bangers and homemade burgers. Why not combine with treats from The Gourmet Goat Farmer for a truly local BBQ feast?

Cotswold Water Park

When you hear the words ‘Water Park’ you’d be forgiven for picturing a mass of water slides and noisy crowds. Although you can enjoy Total Wipeout style adventures, Cotswold Water Park can be a tranquil spot, in fact it is a beautiful wetlands landscape in an area over 40 square miles with 180 lakes making it one of the best wild swimming spots in Wiltshire! It’s essentially a mini village surrounding the lakes, combining water sports, restaurants and a nature reserve - there really is something for everyone here.

Hire a Boat in Bath

If you plan to visit Bath whilst staying in Avebury then hiring a boat to explore the River Avon is a must. It offers a chance to explore the city from another perspective, taking in the sights at your own leisurely pace. Pack a picnic and hire a rowing boat, or try your hand at punting but be warned, it’s harder than it looks!

Step Back in Time in Lacock

Lacock is a charming village in Wiltshire that appears as though it’s been frozen in time. Its oldest house is older than the thirteenth-century abbey and with much of the village owned by The National Trust, new developments have been kept to a minimum. Steeped in history, Lacock’s picturesque streets are lined with quaint stone cottages making it an ideal backdrop for film and TV - Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince was filmed in Lacock Abbey!

Grab an ice cream and wander through the old-worldly streets of Lacock in the Summer sun. Lacock Dairy uses the sweet milk from its Selves Farm dairy herd to create its very own gelato in a selection of mouth-watering flavours. You can sample their delights at Lacock bakery or The Rising Sun.

Bowood House Outdoor Cinema

Adventure Cinema is hosting outdoor cinema experiences throughout the Summer at a handful of locations including Bowood House. This Summer they’re celebrating 50 years of ABBA with a screening of Mamma Mia! along with 70s and 80s music to enjoy before the film. What better way to spend a Summer evening than relaxing under the stars in the beautiful grounds of Bowood House, watching a film with your favourite snacks! Just remember to pack your camping chairs and popcorn (and perhaps an umbrella as it is England after all…).
