Silbury Hill
Inspiring myth and legend, this astonishing man-made prehistoric mound (the largest in Europe), marks the entrance to our farm. At around 40m high, its purpose remains a mystery. Some estimates suggest it took around 4 million man-hours to build using chalk excavated from a surrounding ditch.
West Kennet
Long Barrow
In the middle of our farm sits one of the largest, most impressive and most accessible Neolithic chambered tombs in Britain. Built around 3650 BC, it was used for around 1000 years as a burial chamber, remains of 46 people were found inside – both male and female and of all ages – together with grave goods including pottery, beads and stone implements such as a dagger. The barrow was first excavated in 1859 and then again, scientifically, in 1955–6, after which the site was restored and the façade and chambers at the eastern end reconstructed. As local Julian Cope says “The chambers are impressive, as is the façade and the barrow itself is lovingly maintained, the view from the top was wonderful too.”
Avebury Stone Circle
The henge and stone circles are one of the greatest marvels of prehistoric Britain. Built and much altered during the Neolithic period. The bank and ditch are almost a mile in circumference, and the ditch was originally around nine metres deep. The banks were built up from chalk, dug from the ditch using stone and bone tools, and both would have been bright white when new. The henge survives as a huge circular bank and ditch, encircling an area that includes part of the pretty village of Avebury. Within the henge is the largest stone circle in Britain - originally of about 100 stones - which in turn encloses two smaller stone circles. The stones are enormous, with the largest around 100 tonnes (in context our courtyard stone was 4 tonnes!)
The Sanctuary
The Sanctuary looks down upon our farm to the east and must have played a significant part in the pre-history of this area. Likely a remarkable ceremonial temple, built of concentric rings of standing stones and wooden posts; although we do not know if the stones and posts all stood at the same time. Of course it would be a little more Sanctuary like had the A4 not been built directly next to it!
Waden Hill
Silburys more natural neighbour. This hill is well worth clambering up, particularly in late spring when lush with green and wild flowers. The view of Silbury in the background is exquisite and once on top the view of the surrounding area is camera worthy!
Beyond Avebury
Beyond Avebury, there’s a treasure trove of historic gems all worthy of a day trip from the farm. Wander the Georgian streets of Bath, marvel at the mystery of Stonehenge, step back in time in the perfectly preserved village of Lacock or relive Downton Abbey at Highclere Castle. You can explore Salisbury’s soaring medieval cathedral, or the Roman ruins in Cirencester. From ancient wonders to timeless towns, our corner of Wiltshire is the perfect base for history-filled adventures.
